Byte Converter
Convert precisely between bits (bit), bytes (B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), petabytes (PB) and exabytes (EB). Type a value into any field and every other unit is calculated instantly.
What it does
Byte Converter translates a data size between eight storage units: bits (bit), bytes (B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), petabytes (PB) and exabytes (EB). Type a value into any field and the other seven fields update instantly, so you can go from a file size in bytes to gigabytes, or from a disk size in terabytes down to bits, without doing the math by hand.
The converter uses binary units, which is how operating systems and memory are measured: 1 byte is 8 bits and every step from KB to EB multiplies by 1024. It is handy for estimating file and backup sizes, sizing memory and disks, checking cloud storage quotas and understanding why a drive shows less space than the number printed on the box.
Real-time, two-way conversion
Every field is both an input and an output. Edit any unit and all others are recalculated as you type.
Copy raw or formatted values
Copy the plain value from an input field, or copy the formatted value with thousands separators from the result line beside it. Very small results are shown in scientific notation (for example 9.536743e-7) and can be pasted straight back into any field.
Precise small and large values
Fractions keep six significant digits and are never rounded down to zero, while whole numbers are shown in full, up to exabyte-sized values.
Privacy note
All processing happens in your browser — your data never leaves your device. Nothing you type is uploaded to just top tools or any other server.
How to use
Pick the unit you know
Find the field for the unit you already have, from bit at the top to EB at the bottom.
Type the value
Enter a whole number, a decimal, a value with thousands separators such as 1,024, or scientific notation such as 1e-6. Negative or non-numeric input clears the other fields.
Read and copy the results
All other units update immediately. Use the copy buttons to grab a value, or click Clear all to start over.
1 in the GB field and you get 8,589,934,592 bit, 1,073,741,824 B, 1,048,576 KB, 1,024 MB, 0.000976563 TB. Enter 100 in the B field and the MB field shows 0.0000953674.
Storage units at a glance
Bit (bit)
0 or 1
The smallest unit of digital information. Network speeds are usually quoted in bits per second.
Byte (B)
1 B = 8 bits
The basic unit for file sizes; one byte holds a single ASCII character.
Kilobyte (KB)
1 KB = 1,024 B
Small text files, icons and configuration files.
Megabyte (MB)
1 MB = 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 B
Photos, songs, documents and small applications.
Gigabyte (GB)
1 GB = 1,024 MB
Memory (RAM), phone storage, videos and games.
Terabyte (TB)
1 TB = 1,024 GB
Hard drives, SSDs and backup volumes.
Petabyte (PB)
1 PB = 1,024 TB
Data centers, data lakes and large cloud storage accounts.
Exabyte (EB)
1 EB = 1,024 PB
Hyperscale storage and internet-wide traffic statistics.
Binary (1024) vs decimal (1000)
Binary units (this tool)
Computers address memory in powers of two, so 1 KB = 2^10 = 1024 bytes. Operating systems such as Windows report file and disk sizes this way.
Decimal units
Drive manufacturers and network vendors use powers of ten, so 1 KB = 1000 bytes and 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
KiB, MiB and GiB
The IEC standard names binary units KiB, MiB and GiB and reserves KB, MB and GB for decimal units. This tool keeps the familiar KB/MB/GB labels but always calculates with 1024.
Why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB
A drive sold as 1 TB holds 10^12 bytes. Divided by 1024 three times, that is about 931 GB as reported by your computer.
FAQ
Is 1 KB equal to 1000 or 1024 bytes?
Both conventions exist. This converter uses the binary convention, 1 KB = 1024 bytes and 1 MB = 1024 KB, which matches how memory and most operating systems measure size. Storage vendors often use 1 KB = 1000 bytes instead.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KiB (kibibyte) always means 1024 bytes, while KB is officially 1000 bytes under the IEC standard but is widely used to mean 1024 bytes. The values in this tool correspond to KiB, MiB, GiB and so on.
How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?
Network speeds are measured in bits, file sizes in bytes. Divide the bit rate by 8: a 100 Mbps connection transfers at most about 12.5 MB/s, before protocol overhead.
Why does my new hard drive show less space than advertised?
The label uses decimal units while your operating system uses binary units, so 1 TB on the box appears as roughly 931 GB. No space is missing; it is the same number of bytes counted differently.
Is the data I enter uploaded anywhere?
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. The values you type are never sent to a server.
